It is my guestimation that there were over 200 attending this Culture+Theology (although the worship center looked full!). As we crowded in the lobby, there were several tables laden with assortments of cookies and coolers filled with iced-down water and soft drinks. When the doors opened a few minutes until 7 PM, we were immediately aware that the smoky dry ice machines were in high gear, as the worship area was slightly dimmed with its harmless carbon dioxide, giving a sense of mystery and awe to the atmosphere. The stage was void of any activity and had only a center screen (although I don't think it was Matt's!) and a podium and a lit individual podium light at stage right (the audience's left). When everyone was seated, we were greeted by Pastor Josh Patterson (I think!) who immediately introduced us to and encouraged us to welcome Dr. Glenn Kreider, who took the stage.
The session was a monologue by Dr. Kreider mixed with several video scenes of U2 and their music. The video was displayed centerstage on the main screen, then simultaneously displayed close to the ceiling in three spots just over the main screen, giving everyone ample viewing. ADDITIONALLY (yes, additionally!), there was displayed overhead on the ceiling, various words and images. You had the feeling that you were in a rock concert and/or were present in the very ones being displayed on the screens! But, while all this music and imagery was going on, there was a dull silence in the room, everyone attentively listening, seeing and learning about U2, Bono and their theology and faith in God.
It was by far the most fantastic display of information and ingenuity (no additional equipment was purchased for this event!) I have seen. My applause to those involved in its planning and success execution.
